Lunar New Year Preschool Activities: Exploring the Chinese Zodiac with CONNETIX

Lunar New Year Preschool Activities: Exploring the Chinese Zodiac with CONNETIX

By CONNETIX

Lunar New Year is a time of family, renewal and rich cultural tradition, offering meaningful opportunities for children to explore stories, symbols and shared values through play. In preschool and early learning settings, it also provides a natural context for hands-on, inquiry-based learning that supports both cultural understanding and developmental growth.

To support this, we’ve prepared some helpful Chinese Zodiac resource cards and activity ideas featuring all twelve animals in the zodiac cycle. Using CONNETIX magnetic tiles, children can build, adapt and reimagine each animal, from winding Dragons to sturdy Oxen and speedy Rats. These open-ended activities support STEAM learning as children explore shape, balance, symmetry and problem-solving, while also encouraging creativity and imaginative design.

For educators and parents, the resources create opportunities to support MESH skills such as collaboration, communication and emotional awareness, as children share ideas, take turns, and talk about the qualities and values associated with each zodiac animal. The activities are easily adapted for different ages and learning contexts, making them suitable for preschool classrooms, early years settings and family play at home.

Exploring the Zodiac Animals Through Play-Based Activities

Below, you’ll find ideas for exploring each of the twelve zodiac animals through simple CONNETIX builds. Use the descriptions as conversation starters, storytelling prompts or invitations to experiment with shape, balance and design. Educators may choose to explore the animals one at a time or across several sessions, adapting the builds and discussions to suit their group, interests and learning focus.

Horse

The Horse is full of energy and freedom. When children build the Horse with tiles, they can experiment with tall shapes and strong legs to show its lively spirit. It’s a fun way to spark conversations about adventure and movement, and to celebrate the joy of play during Lunar

Rat

The Rat is quick and clever, the first animal in the zodiac race. When children build the Rat with CONNETIX tiles, they can see how small shapes come together to make something nimble and smart. It’s a fun way to talk about problem-solving and remind kids that even the smallest creatures can make a big impact.

Ox

The Ox is strong and steady, known for its determination. Building the Ox with tiles is all about creating solid shapes and sturdy lines. As kids work on this animal, it’s a chance to talk about patience and persistence; qualities that help the Ox succeed in the zodiac story and that matter in everyday life too.

Rabbit

The Rabbit is gentle and kind, often linked to peace and good fortune. As children create, you can talk about kindness and caring for others, making the Rabbit a wonderful way to connect play with values.

Tiger

The Tiger is bold and brave, full of energy. Using CONNETIX tiles, children can add stripes and strong features to capture its fierce look. While building, you can chat about what bravery means. Whether it’s trying something new, speaking up, or showing confidence. The Tiger is a great reminder of courage during Lunar New Year.

Dragon

The Dragon is a symbol of luck and celebration, and it’s the only mythical creature in the zodiac. Children love building long, winding Dragons with red and yellow tiles, letting their imaginations run wild. It’s a chance to talk about how traditions mix with creativity, and why the Dragon is such an important part of Lunar New Year festivities.

Monkey

The Monkey is curious and playful, always ready for fun. Children can design their Monkey with cheeky details, sparking conversations about exploring, asking questions, and trying new things. The Monkey reminds us that learning doesn’t have to be serious; it can be joyful and full of discovery.

Snake

The Snake is calm and wise, moving with grace. Building a Snake means arranging tiles into spirals or winding lines, which takes focus and patience. As children work, you can highlight how wisdom often comes from observation and careful thinking, just like the Snake who moves quietly but thoughtfully.

Goat

The Goat is gentle and creative, often linked to peace and harmony. Building a Goat with tiles encourages children to try different combinations and explore unique shapes. As they create, you can talk about imagination and kindness, making the Goat a perfect reminder of how creativity and care go hand in hand.

Rooster

The Rooster is confident and hardworking, proud to announce the start of each day. Building a Rooster with bright tiles is a chance to show off its feathers and bold personality. As children create, you can talk about responsibility and pride in achievements, just like the Rooster who never misses its morning call.

Dog

The Dog is loyal and friendly, a trusted companion in the zodiac. Building a Dog with tiles is a chance to celebrate friendship and kindness. As children construct, they can share stories about trust and caring for others, learning that loyalty is an important value both in the zodiac and in everyday life.

Pig

The Pig is joyful and generous, representing abundance and celebration. Round shapes work well when building this animal, and it’s a fun opportunity to talk about sharing and enjoying time with family. The Pig reminds us that Lunar New Year is about happiness and prosperity, making it a cheerful way to end the zodiac cycle.
