Everyday Moments Matter When Battling a Disease

Every minute, four women are diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide and one woman dies from the disease.

In Australia alone, 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Within our CONNETIX team, almost 90% of staff have been personally affected by the disease, and 1 in 5 have had an immediate family member diagnosed. 

Australian Breast Cancer Research (ABCR) is fighting relentlessly for treatments and cures for breast cancer that will benefit people across the globe. A beacon of hope for so many families, ABCR is dedicated to investing in global groundbreaking medical research to reduce the impact, and find better prevention, detection, management and treatment of the disease.  

With every donation received and support from the community, ABCR can continue to invest in life-changing medical research that’s having a global impact on saving lives from breast cancer. 

From improving the diagnosis for triple negative breast cancer to educating women about breast density and its implications for identifying breast cancer, ABCR are pioneering a range of exciting projects that are showing promising developments.

Our Personal Link to Finding a Cure

Finding a cure for breast cancer is a cause that is close to the hearts of all of us at CONNETIX. Some of our team members have courageously shared their personal stories and what finding a cure would mean to them.  

      It is never easy to get that diagnosis of having breast cancer at the young age of 45, but staying positive and willing to fight and beat it made a difference for me! Things that seemed like a big deal before in perspective really aren’t all that bad after fighting for my life with a very fast growing and aggressive breast cancer. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff! I was diagnosed officially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2020. I went in for my annual appointment at the end of September and my doctor found one lump and after ultrasounds they found 4 more. This can be found in men and women so be sure to do your checks regularly! April 20th 2026, I will be celebrating my 5 years of being cancer free”

      My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 7 years ago. It came as a surprise to all of us as we have never had any family history with the disease but she was lucky and caught it early, getting straight to the doctors once she felt the lump and beginning treatment shortly after. She has been cancer free since the completion of her treatment, and we went on a family holiday to cherish some much-needed time together as a family and to celebrate the end of her treatment. I think the thing that sometimes goes unnoticed about cancer is that once you have been diagnosed, it is a lifelong disease. There is always a constant fear that it will come back and if it does, the chances of survival decrease. My mum has always been fit and healthy – exercising, going to the gym and eating really well, but since her diagnosis she has really stepped this up and makes sure she does everything she can to limit the cancer coming back. She is constantly looking to the latest research to learn about how she can maintain her health and what she can be doing better to limit the chances of it returning, it is a cloud that lives over us all and that is why the ongoing research into stopping, treating and curing this disease is so important.”

      Breast cancer has affected multiple women in my family, including my beautiful mum who recently underwent radiation treatment for early-stage breast cancer. While she was incredibly lucky to catch it early, it still came as a deep shock to our family. With two daughters and a family history of Breast Cancer, we were so grateful she was offered genetic testing which thankfully came back as low risk. That’s why supporting research into better treatments and finding a cure is incredibly important to me – for my mum, my family, my daughter’s future, and for women all around the world.”

        5 years ago, my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. She completed radiation and went into remission. Everything was fine up until 12 months ago, when she started having a persistent cough, and sore hips. Unfortunately, her cancer returned and metastasised to bones, brain and lungs. She is currently undergoing palliative treatment, which so far is helping shrink tumors, and giving us more time with her. She continues to live her life with a positive attitude, not knowing how much time she has left earthside & spending as much time with family and grandkids as possible.

       Two years ago, my family was hit hard by breast cancer. My mum had already gone through the full journey ten years prior: chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. She was doing well, and we thought we’d left that chapter behind.
Then my sister, while breastfeeding her baby, felt a lump. The GP initially dismissed it as a blocked milk duct, but she trusted her instincts and kept pushing for answers. After several visits, she finally got a scan. It was cancer. As she began her treatment, our world shifted again. My mum relapsed. They ended up in the same hospital, with the same oncologist. It was surreal and heartbreaking. My sister was mid-treatment while we were planning our mum’s funeral together. The weight of it all was indescribable.
Despite the grief and chaos, I saw incredible strength in her and her support network that came together.
 
As for me, I’ve learned that I carry an increased risk due to our family history. I’m now monitored regularly at the Familial Cancer Clinic. It’s not easy living with that awareness, but I’m grateful for the care and vigilance. This experience taught me how vital it is to advocate for your health, to push when something doesn’t feel right, and to lean on the support systems around you.
 
Breast cancer isn’t just a diagnosis. It’s a journey that affects entire families.
